David has over 35 years’ experience in research and investment management and has been Chief Investment Officer for Booster Financial Services since November 2000. Prior to joining Booster, David
spent 17 years at Westpac Financial Services, where had a variety of roles, including three years as General Manager Investments, and five years as Chief Investment Officer.
David has a Bachelor of Management Studies degree, with majors in Economics,
Maths & Marketing. He is an Associate Member of the Institute of Actuaries, an Associate Member of the Institute of Financial Advisers and a Member of INFINZ, the Institute of Financial Professionals of NZ.
When he is not looking after people’s money, David is a NZ Football (soccer) Referee Badge holder and referees senior men’s Central League football matches most weekends.

He is co-founder and CEO of Pathfinder Asset Management, a boutique fund manager specialising in ethical investment. Pathfinder’s funds include ESG-focused water, global equity and global property strategies.
John is a trustee of Men’s Health Trust NZ and a director of Punakaiki Fund Limited, a venture capital investor in twenty NZ growth companies. He is also a member of the government-appointed Code Working Group, which is designing a new code of conduct for financial advice in New Zealand.

At RIAA Nicolette leads the organisation’s policy and research agendas and is a member of the PRI’s Global Policy Reference Group. She also oversees the administration of the industry’s Responsible Investment Certification Program – that now covers more than 150 responsible and ethical investment and retirement savings products as well as financial advisers and financial planning groups.

Nicolette joins RIAA after 25 years delivering engagements, collaborations and accountability solutions for and with Australian and international companies, governments, unions and NGOs. She has worked at the Australian Conservation Foundation and Investor Group on Climate Change and has held executive roles at The Climate Institute, the Clean Energy Finance Corporation, Banarra and the Sustainable Energy Development Authority.

Nicolette is lead judge for NSW’s GREEN GLOBE Awards and Banksia Foundation’s Award for Circular Economy. She is also an interim Board member on Brand Ethics, an internationally reaching research institute promoting ethical shopping choices by providing labour, environmental and animal rights ratings on over 1,000 consumer brands.

Barry has been involved in responsible investment since the early 1990s and played a leading role in building demand for fair trade in NZ. He has a Masters from Yale University in management, experience as a business strategy consultant and has been the CEO of charities, most recently Oxfam New Zealand 2003-2014. After working as an ESG Analyst at CAER for two years, Nina began her role as Research Project Manager in February 2017. In this position, Nina has gained experience managing a broad range of research projects covering issues such as gender pay equity, companies operating in conflict zones and animal welfare.
Nina holds a Bachelor of International Relations (Honours) from the Australian National University. This year, she was selected to participate in the Audrey Fagan Leadership Program and completed a series of Australian Institute of Company Directors courses. Nina is also on track to complete a Graduate Diploma of Financial Planning by the end of 2018.

Her academic background and work at CAER have helped form a specialised interest in methods of negative screening in the investment process and international humanitarian law and human rights issues. Nina has worked on both the 2016 pilot and the 2018 iteration of the Corporate Human Rights Benchmark and as an active member of both the RIAA Corporate Engagement Working Group and Human Rights Working Group, regularly presents on human-rights related developments.

Martin was appointed Chief Risk Officer in July 2018. Prior to this he was IAG NZ’s Executive General Manager Strategy, People and Reputation (2014 – 2018), and General Counsel and Company Secretary (2007 – 2013). He practised law in New Zealand before spending seven years at Schroder Investment Management in London, returning to New Zealand in 2000. Martin has extensive external relations, banking, funds management and insurance experience where he has led portfolios of functions in complex and dynamic markets, requiring transformational change.
As Chief Risk Officer, Martin has overall responsibility for risk and strategy within IAG NZ.

Robert Joseph (Waikato University)

Dr Joseph completed his PhD in Law at Waikato University in 2006 through a dissertation that explored Indigenous governance models in New Zealand and North America. Dr Joseph is a Barrister and Solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand, senior law lecturer, director of the Centre for Māori and Indigenous Governance at the University of Waikato, and he was a Fulbright Scholar at Harvard University and the University of Arizona in 2017. Dr Joseph is an independent Resource Management Act hearing commissioner, and a licensed researcher and expert witness for the Waitangi Tribunal where he authored and defended a number of expert reports including on the 2016 Rangitīkei River Cultural Perspectives Report and the 2017, Ngā Wai o te Māori Ngā Tikanga me Ngā Ture Roia: The Waters of the Māori: Māori Law and State Law Report 2018. Dr Joseph has worked extensively with Māori and Indigenous groups on governance and environmental matters including Waikato-Tainui, Ngāti Raukawa, Ngāti Maniapoto, Ngāti Tuwharetoa, Ngāti Pikiao, Ngāti Kahungunu, Ngāti Ranginui, and others. Dr Joseph is moreover a primary investigator for two National Science Challenge projects exploring the interface of tikanga Māori and mainstream law and mana whakahaere Māori governance jurisdiction over the marine environment within an ecosystem based management (EBM) context.

Kristen Le Mesurier joined the Multi-Asset Group as a portfolio manager in July 2017 with responsibility for the RIL diversified funds. These funds are global multi-asset funds with an ethical overlay across every asset class.

Kristen was actively engaged in these funds before becoming portfolio manager in her capacity as a senior ESG researcher at AMP Capital. In that role, she carried out ESG investment research for AMP Capital's equities and fixed income teams and ran engagement agendas on cultural practices in the banks, sugar and obesity, human rights and tax.

Before joining AMP Capital, Kristen was an equities analyst covering Australian banks and insurers, and a corporate governance analyst advising institutional investors on governance risks across the ASX200.

Before entering the investment industry, Kristen was a commercial litigator at Piper Alderman specialising in insurance and maritime law, and a business journalist with Fairfax.

Kristen holds bachelor degrees in Commerce and Law and a Master of Laws from the University of Sydney.

Since joining in 1999, she has held several positions in Rosenberg Equities, including: Director of Investment Strategy, Senior Strategist for Emerging Markets and Asia ex-Japan, Head of Investments for Australia/New Zealand, Portfolio Manager and Senior Product Strategist.
Prior to joining Rosenberg Equities, Kathryn was a consultant at BARRA Inc.

Before joining us at MartinJenkins, Patrick spent five years at ATEED (Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development), where he led the organisation’s business, innovation and skills activities as well as the wider economic insight and analysis programme.

Erica works across all elements of the ESG/Investment value chain, from ESG due diligence, stakeholder engagement, ESG risk identification and management, governance, strategy design and policy, EHS management systems, compliance and internal audit, through to reporting and assurance. Erica believes in working with clients to develop practical solutions that create long-term value for all stakeholders. Erica is also an independent assessor for RIAA’s responsible investment certification programme.

Matthew Mimms (Managing Director, The Investment Store)

Matthew Mimms is the Managing Director and Founder of the Investment Store. Matthew has 28 years experience in the investment management and financial services industry both in New Zealand and the UK. Prior to establishing the Investment Store, he was Head of Retail Sales and Service at BT Funds Management.

He has held a number of senior distribution positions and was the Chair of the Auckland branch of the Financial Planners and Insurance Advisers Association from 2000 to 2002.

In 2006, Matthew established The Investment Store, a specialist 3rd party distribution firm that aims to assist boutique and specialist managers to market their capabilities to professional intermediaries in NZ.

In 2010, Matthew was integrally involved in the NZ Responsible Investment Briefing, an annual industry conference aimed at championing the responsible investment movement amongst industry participants in NZ. In addition, Matthew is co-founder of Perfecting Investment Portfolios, a thought leadership conference for professional financial intermediaries. Both events are now regular features in the industry calendar.

He has a business degree from Sheffield University in England and a Diploma in Business Studies (personal financial planning) from Massey University.

Simon operates at the intersection of economics, finance and sustainability and has extensive international experience as an economic adviser, investment analyst and sustainability consultant across finance, corporate and not for profit sectors.
Simon is the CEO of RIAA - an organisation with 200+ investor members who jointly manage over $9 trillion - where he has worked for the past 5 years to elevate sustainability issues as core investment risks and opportunities, and shift capital to support a more sustainable, equitable and prosperous world.
Simon is involved in a number of external committees and advisory groups including the Global Sustainable Investment Alliance, the New Zealand National Advisory Board on Impact Investing and the UN backed Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) Australia Network Advisory Committee.

Simon O’Grady is Chief Investment Officer at Kiwi Wealth and leads the Investment Management Team, with overall responsibility for investment management processes and functions. An experienced senior executive with extensive hands-on experience across all asset classes and styles, Simon has a strong track record in building and operating successful investment management businesses in both New Zealand and Australia. Simon has spent 25 years working in investment management, with previous experience in various senior management roles including stints heading the areas of investment strategy, fixed interest, asset allocation, global and alternatives in Australia. Prior to this, he was with the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, managing their foreign reserve investment portfolios. A CFA charter holder, Simon is also a fellow of the Financial Services Institute Australasia (F.FIN) and a current director of the CFA society. He is an Authorised Financial Adviser (AFA) and holds a Diploma in Bank Finance from Massey University.

Tama Potaka joined the NZ Superannuation Fund in February 2017 to develop and coordinate the activities of the Fund's newly-established Investment Hub. The aim of the Investment Hub is to work on opportunities the Fund can create with local partners such as Iwi/Māori within New Zealand.

Tama comes from Ngāti Hauiti, Mōkai Pātea, Whanganui and Taranaki and is connected to Ngāti Tuwharetoa, Ngāti Raukawa and Ngāti Toarangatira. Before joining the NZ Super Fund, Tama was a member of the Leadership Team at Tainui Group Holdings Limited, where he was responsible for a number of corporate and commercial roles including in-house counsel and Board secretary. He previously worked as a solicitor at Bell Gully, as a consultant in the public and private sector, and as an attorney in the United States.

In his spare time, Tama and his wife Ariana run TriMāori - a kaupapa focussed on whānau/family health and wellbeing, keeping holistically fit - and investing energy into his whānau and their children Tiaria, Te Awarua and Aorangi. He is interested in Māori and New Zealand development, the primary sector, governance, and culture and language. This has included working with Ariana to publish unedited bi-lingual works of Pei Te Hurinui Jones.

Growing up, Tama’s parents were involved in securing the land of his father's whānau and in revitalising Rata marae. He attended Te Aute College, a Māori boarding school in Central Hawke's Bay. One of about 10 Māori boarding schools throughout the country, the school was set up in 1854 (making it one of New Zealand's oldest) through engagement between the Crown, Anglican church and local iwi Te Whatu-i-āpiti. He graduated with degrees in Politics, Māori Studies and Law (First Class Honours) from Victoria University. He gained a Masters of Law at Columbia University in New York, with a focus on constitutional law and human rights.

Alastair Rhodes was appointed Chief Executive of BayTrust in 2015. BayTrust has a current investment portfolio of ~$220m of assets and has recently committed to allocating 6% of its investment base to Impact Investments with this allocation raising to 10% if sufficient opportunities are identified. Prior to his appointment, Alastair has held senior executive roles in the aviation and consulting industries and has a background in legal, commercial and strategy.

Alastair has helped BayTrust to take a leadership position on impact investment in NZ with current concessionary impact investments totalling $4m and due diligence well underway on another $5m of non-concessionary impact investments throughout the BOP.

Alastair has a passion for the benefits associated from impact investing, both from the positive social returns and also the ability for this asset class to help compliment and diversify an overall investment portfolio through driving non correlated and acceptable risk adjusted commercial returns. Long term he has the ambition for the Trusts entire investment portfolio to not just drive the appropriate risk adjusted financial return but to also to do good at the same time with the view that this will not only produce positive social returns but also superior long term financial performance.

Paul has 27 years experience in the financial sector as a Chief Investment Officer , fund manager and an investment analyst. He is a shareholder and Director of AgInvest Holdings and has had a 12 year association with MyFarm, witha focus on Sustainable agri investing. From 2013 he was an Executive Director and Chief Investment Officer of Mint Asset Management and led its ESG approach, is currently a Director of the Chartered Financial Analysts Society of NZ and Chairs the NZ Corporate Governance Forum. Paul was 10 years as fund manager and Chief Investment Officer at BT Funds/Westpac NZ, and 12 years as Executive Director and Head of Equities Research at UBS (originally Buttle Wilson , then SBC Warburg) in NZ and Australia. Prior to this Paul worked in Asia as an exploration geologist for KRTA, Rio and Austpac. Paul has a Bachelor of Science in Geology from Auckland University (1983), holds the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and Authorised Financial Advisor (AFA) qualifications and is member of the NZ Institute of Directors and the Institute of Finance Professionals of NZ (INFINZ).

Slade draws on his extensive investment management experience from his time as Head of Equities at BT Investment Management in New Zealand and portfolio management roles at Challenger International (NZ) and BNP Paribas in Australia.

Michael was a cofounder in the Climakind initiative to reduce global carbon emissions by promoting a price on carbon and a thought leader in solutions to the rising levels of global carbon emissions. Michael is an established research analyst specialising in portfolio analysis and investment strategy. He was part of the highly rated team at Bank of America - Merrill Lynch as the head of Emerging Markets quantitative equity analysis.

Catalina manages Sustainalytics’ presence in Asia Pacific, working with investors across the region to support the development and implementation of their responsible investment strategies, as well as well as leading the client servicing teams in these regions. Prior to moving to Sydney in 2015, Catalina was responsible for establishing Sustainalytics’ London office, with a focus on UK based investment managers and asset owners.
Catalina has over eight years’ experience in sustainable and responsible investment and before joining Sustainalytics, she was a Program Manager at the UK Sustainable Investment and Finance Association (UKSIF), where she was responsible for UKSIF’s programs geared towards institutional investors, including a series of ESG events, convening investor engagement and collaboration groups, and other investor led programmes. Catalina has been an active member of several responsible investment groups including the Analyst Committee Group of UKSIF, the international working group of the US Responsible Investment Association, as well as the RIAA engagement group. She was also a founding member of the “Next Generation” initiative, a peer support network for individuals working in responsible investment in the UK, as well as the founding group of the “Women in Sustainable Finance” network, based in Sydney.
Catalina has a master’s degree in Corporate Social Responsibility from Nottingham University Business School and a bachelor’s degree in Political Science.

Sam has an MA (Hons) in Politics from the University of Auckland.

Rebecca Thomas (CEO, Mint Asset Management)

Rebecca founded Mint in 2006. She has a strong pedigree in funds management, with a career spanning 30 years, both in New Zealand and offshore.

Her previous executive positions include Managing Director and Chief Investment Officer of Johnson Fry, a London-based funds management firm, acquired by Legg Mason, where she went on to hold the position of Group Chief Executive Officer. On moving to New Zealand she became Chief Investment Officer for ING (NZ) Limited.

Rebecca has been a Director and Chair of the AFRC of KiwiRail Holding Limited and an Associate member and AFRC Chair on the Board of the Financial Markets Authority from 2011-2016. She has also held several non-executive directorships for investment and property trusts, including Pathfinder Development Companies and LMI European Utilities Investment Trust Plc.

Rebecca is a member of the Institute of Directors of both New Zealand and London, as well as a member of the Securities and Investment Institute of London. She has completed examinations for the UK Institute of Investment Management and Research and the London Stock Exchange.

As CEO, Rebecca is responsible for the management of Mint, working closely with the executive team and Board to achieve the vision that drove her to establish the firm and continues to drive it forward.

Roy Thompson (Managing Director, New Ground Capital Limited)

Roy is the founder and managing director of New Ground Capital, a specialist investment manager spearheading the development of build-to-rent housing investments and impact investment funds, in the NZ market. New Ground recently co-founded the Impact Enterprise Fund with Akina Foundation.

During a 30 year banking career, Roy was Global Head of Product Management and Investment Services for Deutsche Bank AG Private Wealth Management, based in London, and locally led Westpac’s national Private Wealth Management business and the Business Bank for the Auckland region.

Over the last 20 years, Roy has started and grown businesses spanning hospitality, aviation and prefabricated housing. Currently he is Chair of a prefab housing manufacturer, Smart Panels, and is driving the introduction of long term residential rentals to the NZ market through New Ground Living.

An avid hunter and diver concerned for the future of our natural environment, Roy and his wife own the Mamaku Point Conservation Reserve on Stewart Island.

Vinnie is responsible for BetaShares’ distribution strategy to institutional investors and financial advisory groups. Vinnie has extensive experience in the investment management industry. He has held senior distribution roles with ING Australia, Allianz Dresdner Asset Management and Third Link Investment Managers. Prior to that he was Head of Research at AMP Financial Services responsible for fund manager selection & review and model portfolio construction. Vinnie has attained the Certified Investment Management Analyst (CIMA®) designation and holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree.

Leah joined Australian Ethical in December 2016 and is responsible for client relationships across all of Australian Ethical’s intermediated channels, including financial planners, employers, and institutional clients. Leah has more than 20-years’ experience in financial services distribution, including senior distribution positions with Rothschild Asset Management, BT Financial Group, Barclays Global Investors, and most recently as Head of Key Accounts for IOOF.
Australian Ethical was launched in 1986 and is a publicly listed company that invests and operates its business according to its Ethical Charter. 10% of its profits fund its Community Grants program, one of the highest levels of corporate giving in Australia. Its superannuation fund was the fastest growing superannuation fund in 2016 for both assets under management and growth in member numbers. David has extensive governance experience in financial and non-financial Boards; he is a Director of Whai Rawa Fund Ltd, a trustee of The Gift Trust, and Chairman of the Impact Enterprise Fund, in addition to sitting on three overseas microfinance company boards for the Aga Khan Foundation as an independent director. Prior to starting Retyna, Liz worked for the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA) for 22 years. As General Manager Transport at EECA, Liz led the creation, design and implementation of EECA’s Low Emission Vehicles Contestable Fund and the EV Information Campaign. Prior to joining EECA Liz worked for New Zealand based international consultants specialising in transport and residential energy mainly in developing countries. She holds a Masters degree in Natural Resource Engineering. Liz is a Chartered Member, Engineering New Zealand and a Member, Chartered Institute of Transport and Logistics New Zealand.
